Audience Translation Framework

Your content isn’t underperforming because it’s poorly written. It’s underperforming because it’s written for the wrong model of your reader.

Every piece of content your team publishes rests on an assumption — what the reader already knows, what they’re trying to do, what words mean something to them, and how ready they are to act. Most teams never write that assumption down. It just lives as intuition, different in every writer’s head, and it’s usually wrong in the same predictable ways.

The symptoms show up everywhere: users dropping off at the same point in onboarding. Support tickets asking questions your help centre already answers. Marketing copy that drives traffic but not conversions. Feature announcements that confuse the very people they’re meant to excite.

The Audience Translation Framework is a documented, fixed-scope engagement that fixes the root cause — not by rewriting your content once, but by building your team a reference system for how your specific audience actually receives information, so every future piece of content starts from the right assumptions.

Why Teams Work With Me on This

  1. This Solves the Cause, Not the Symptom Editing individual pages treats one drop-off point. This engagement identifies why your content keeps missing, across everything you publish — and builds something your team keeps using after I’m gone.
  2. Specific to Your Audience, Not a Generic Persona No fill-in-the-blank persona templates. The profile is built from real stakeholder interviews, your existing content, and (where available) actual user research, support tickets, or NPS feedback.
  3. A Framework, Not Just a Report You don’t just receive findings. You receive a practical, 3–4 page guide your writers can open before drafting anything — what vocabulary bridges work, what to avoid, how to calibrate complexity by content type.
  4. Fixed Scope, Fixed Fee, Fixed Timeline Three weeks. One clear deliverable set. No scope creep, no surprise invoices.

The Four Dimensions of the Framework

Every audience profile is built across four specific dimensions — the same four gaps that quietly sink most content:

1. Knowledge Baseline

What does your audience already know? What terms can be used without defining them, and what concepts need scaffolding? Writers almost always assume more prior knowledge than their audience actually has — this dimension maps the real starting point.

2. Reading Context

Where and how is this content actually read? A user reading an error message is frustrated and in a hurry. A patient reading a medical form is anxious and scanning. Reading context determines optimal length, sentence complexity, and how much trust you can assume.

3. Identity Stakes

What does your audience need to believe about themselves while reading? Content that accidentally makes readers feel stupid or patronised loses them before they ever reach the point. This dimension is invisible to most writers — and responsible for a disproportionate share of drop-off.

4. Decision Readiness

How close to action is the reader when they arrive? Content written for someone ready to buy consistently loses readers who are still exploring. This dimension maps where your audience actually is, so your content meets them there instead of several steps ahead.

What You Receive

This engagement produces five concrete deliverables — together, a reference system your team uses on every content decision going forward.

1. Audience Intake Report

A written summary of the research phase: what came out of the stakeholder session, what your existing content reveals about assumed audience knowledge, and where the most significant gaps appear.

2. Audience Profile Document

A 5–7 page profile of your target audience across all four dimensions — knowledge baseline, reading context, identity stakes, decision readiness. Specific to your product and your users, not a generic template.

3. Comprehension Audit

A structured review of 5–10 of your highest-traffic or highest-stakes content pieces, mapped against the audience profile. Every significant gap is flagged with the specific dimension it fails on, plus a rewrite example.

4. Translation Framework

A 3–4 page practical guide your team uses when writing: how to explain complex ideas to this audience, which vocabulary bridges work, what to avoid, and how to calibrate length and complexity by content type.

5. Implementation Call

A 45-minute session after delivery to walk your team through the framework, answer questions, and establish how to apply it to your existing content backlog.

The Process

Week 1 — Research & Intake A 60-minute recorded stakeholder session with 1–2 people closest to your audience (customer success, support lead, or a product manager). You share 10–15 existing content pieces for baseline analysis, and I review any available user research, support tickets, or NPS feedback. The audience intake report is delivered by end of week 1.

Week 2 — Profile & Audit The audience profile document is drafted and delivered mid-week for your review — you annotate what rings true, what feels off, and what’s missing. Once the revised profile is approved, the comprehension audit of 5–10 content pieces is conducted against it.

Week 3 — Framework & Handover The translation framework is drafted from the profile and audit findings. The full deliverable package — profile, audit, and framework — is sent together. Your team reviews (one round of revisions included), followed by a 45-minute implementation call to walk everyone through how to use it.
